Volunteer Opportunities

Summer 2010

Hello friends! This summer is full of exciting volunteer opportunities and I wanted to make you aware of them. The list below is by no means exhaustive, so feel free to call or email to brainstorm your ideas. I look forward to spending this summer with you!

**Also, please keep TCC in your prayers regarding our finances. As you can imagine, we are a non-profit struggling in a bad economy, and we need your support through prayers, volunteerism, and monetary donations if that calling is on your heart. Any little bit helps and it is safe to say that we are in great need of as much support as possible.

If you question the impact of your involvement at TCC, be confident that volunteers truly make a difference here. Do not under estimate your presence. When you volunteer you say to the residents and community members that you care. One of the residents told me last week that he can "feel the love in this place." He was referring to a volunteer group that had served dinner that night. He was brought to tears by the generosity of this community. YOU MATTER. YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

Because of our financial situation there is a temporary spending freeze on all expenses outside of mission critical operations. This means that volunteer projects such as painting, carpentry, etc. must be funded from outside sources before they can be completed by volunteer groups. A big THANK YOU to CJ Buskirk and Sulphur Springs Christian Church for funding and completing the painting of what will soon be a computer lab for the residents (We have a few residents going back to school and need computer access to write papers, work on resumes, etc). Having a computer lab to help these men further their careers would not have been possible without the generous donation of computers from AU and the generous donation of time from Sulphur Springs youth group. YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

With this new system in mind for the time being, please call or email about group projects with time in advance (if possible a month) so we can collaborate together and share ideas on how to raise money for the project you are wanting to complete. I don't see this as a set-back, but a challenge to meet with a positive outlook. I pray these words brings hope to you knowing that we serve a Mighty God who has all of us in His hands. He will provide. Together we can still make a difference even through challenging obstacles!

OUTSIDE PROJECTS

1. Planting flowers!
-We could use flowers bought and planted in our courtyard. There are two flower beds and one big flower bed in the back of the courtyard. The front beds do not get much sun, but the back beds get sun in the afternoon. This would be a great project for a group in the early summer/spring months.

-We could use flowers bought and planted for the front of the Holiday House. That area would get plenty of sun. This would also be a fun project for a family/youth group/avid gardener!

2. Putting a fresh layer of wood chips down in the courtyard.

-We use the courtyard for many things in the summer including cookouts, rest, outdoor meetings, and hopefully outdoor chapels this year. A few yards of wood chips to purchase and help put down would be EXCELLENT!

3. TCC Garden Project!

-We are excited to announce that this summer we will have a "community garden" set up at the corner of Milton Avenue and University Blvd. (by Athletic field just by the Truman Bridge) We will need people to till, plant, water, and even help harvest alongside the residents. We hope it teaches residents gardening skills, along with responsibility and discipline.

4. Helping clean up Town Center Park

-TCC residents have adopted Town Center Park in downtown Anderson as a thank you to the city for supporting us. This is also a great volunteer opportunity for groups of all ages and/or individuals who would like to go out and help our residents keep this city looking clean!

5. Mow Our Properties!**including weeding

- 605 Main Street (Holiday House)

- 1121 Fletcher Street (home behind the large building that used to be the Mustin Memorial Shelter for women)

- 228 E. 12th Street (the old Mustin Memorial Shelter)

-603 Main Street (Rev. Lloyd Lambert's home located right next to the Holiday House—He is not able to take care of it at the present moment)

6. Maintenance

- Handrail at 605 Main Street (Holiday House) needs to be installed for customer safety in the winter.

- Replacing some missing bricks outside of our building

INSIDE PROJECTS

1. Painting Projects ** We ask that all painting projects be done by groups Senior High students or older**

- Administrative entry area painted and/or repair a "drywall hole" in that area

- We do still need our administrative hallway painted.

- Paint/clean walls in residential areas

2. Carpentry

- Sturdier shelves in reception closet

- Handrail at Holiday House

3. Maintenance

- Blinds for night watch office

- Door to porch of Holiday House needs fixing

Kitchen

1. Serve Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner
2. Prepare and serve Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner **It would be wonderful to bring food to prepare! That would help tremendously.

Chapel

1. Speak in Chapel (In order to speak we ask that you meet with Volunteer Coordinator and Executive Director before opportunity is extended.)

2.Worship Team (including singing, dramas, or other forms of worship-- we ask that you meet with Volunteer Coordinator and Executive Director before opportunity is extended.)

3. BE A PRESENCE!

- Can't sing and terrified to speak? NO PROBLEM! Your presence is so important. Having volunteers come to community chapels on Saturday night at 6pm is one of the biggest ways you can help the staff and make an impact on the residents. Ask Volunteer Coordinator about how this has made an impact so far in our services and get involved!
